Fluids to Keep Up With This Winter

posted on

You know how tough an Ohio winter can be, and it’s especially tough on a vehicle. Here are some tips on making sure your car’s fluids are up to the rigors of winter Winter Preventive Maintenance in Akron OH weather:

Antifreeze: The term “antifreeze” is a bit of a misnomer, since it’s really coolant. Coolant is a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water; the additives in antifreeze raise the boiling point of coolant to protect the engine in the summer, and lower the freezing point for winter protection. Coolant does break down and lose its ability to protect the engine over time; a technician can use a hygrometer to check the coolant’s specific gravity and determine its condition.

Oil change: If you have ever considered switching to synthetic oil, now might be a good time to do it. Startup is a crucial time for any engine; it’s essential that oil make its way to the engine’s upper end (camshafts, valve assemblies, etc) in the first second or two after startup. One of the chief advantages of synthetic oil over conventional mineral-based oil is its stability at the molecular level. Synthetic oil is much less prone to thin out at high temperatures or to thicken and become more viscous in wintertime, meaning it can circulate in the engine more readily at startup.

Windshield washer fluid: Make sure that your windshield washer reservoir is topped off at all times with a good-quality fluid that contains a de-icer and is rated for low temperatures. Never dilute the fluid with water!

Battery: Winter weather slows the chemical reaction in an automotive battery by about 50 percent, making the battery’s job much harder. If your battery is the kind where the cells are not sealed and are accessible, make sure that the cells are topped off with distilled water (which the battery then converts to battery acid).
